This Week’s Top 5 on The 61

Oct 18, 01:32 AM

In case you aren’t obsessed with my lifestream and constantly refreshing my Facebook page, I’ve become a huge fan of the music sharing website TheSixtyOne, using it more than any other music player. You may have noticed their icon on the side of this site, under the listening section.

Anyway, the site is amazing, not just in the quality and quantity of the music, but in the interface and the plugins for social media. Excellent. I can go more in depth for that later, but for now I’ve decided that I’m going to try and do a post every week with my top five songs on TheSixtyOne. These will include whatever I find funny, rocking, relaxing or just plain awesome on the music site.

Without any further explanation, here we go:

1. Publishing Rights by Shael Riley and The Double Ice Backfire

This song is ridiculously catchy, so be forewarned: know that it will be stuck in you head forever. If there is one thing that I can put my finger on, in regard to TheSixtyOne expanding my musical tastes, it is my new affinity for NES-rock bands. Shael Riley and The Double Ice Backfire just rock out in this song, complete with a great beat and catchy lyrics.

Perhaps you can hear a little tired irony in this song? It’s a rock song about music managers stealing the rights to bands’ music. I’m sure there’s some personal experience in there on the part of the band.

2. Real Late Starter remixed by Superpowerless

Superpowerless seems to do mostly remixes, but they’re pretty much all good ones. If you don’t know me, you don’t know my obsession with semi-obscure British artist Nerina Pallot. She released an EP recently and has an album which is coming out soon. Unfortunately, I had to order the EP from England, and it still isn’t here yet. However, I was surprised and pleased to find a remix of her new single on TheSixtyOne. Superpowerless adds more than just a nifty beat and puts some rage into the song, creating a new and excellent entity.

3. Wonderwall covered by the Brad Mehldau Trio

</P<

Even if you don’t like the song Wonderwall, originally by Oasis, I think you’ll like this jazz cover. Quirky and unique in its own way, this Wonderwall cover makes for a great and relaxing listen without sacrificing fun. Besides that, it’s just cool.

4. Celtic Stomp by Coll Andrews

Short, but fun, Celtic Stomp has it all, some awesome instrumentals, very cool vocal work, and crazy sounding instrumentals. When I heard this song it made me sit up and pay attention. It sounds a little like we should be playing it at Stonehenge or something like that. Anyway, take a listen, you may want to clap along.

5. Unicorn Battle by jorel

“The Unicorn has been restored!” = Awesome. This song is hilarious, has a great guitar solo and is about a killer Unicorn that fights evil and sounds a little like a wizard from Lord of the Rings. Every time I listen to this song it makes me chuckle a little.
